Marie Kondo yourself
What can we learn from the master of tidying up?
I just love everything about Marie Kondo.
A few years ago a friend pointed me in the direction of her book ‘The Life Changing Magic of Tidying’ and since then the question ‘does this spark joy?’ is used in every aspect of my life.
After I’d inhaled the book, piles of clutter disappeared almost overnight and everything found its rightful home. Bags of clothes went to pastures new and everything left behind was folded the KonMari way.
It felt amazing. I felt lighter. I was invincible. I could do anything I put my mind to.
Now Marie Kondo is on NetFlix and I think I love her even more because she’s everything that I’m not.
Diminutive, immaculately dressed and softly spoken.
And like Super Nanny and Trinny and Susannah before her she goes into people’s homes and helps them. The only difference she’s not there for feisty children or shapeless clothes. But clutter.
Stuff.
Loads and loads of stuff that we accumulate and think we can’t live without but in keeping it our homes feel overbearing, cramped and messy.
And what I’ve noticed is that while decluttering their homes Marie Kondo’s clients are also decluttering themselves. Saying farewell to things that held little more than memories (and not always good ones) means that they a creating both physical and head space for the things that really matter.
As a coach I’m often told that just having someone to talk things through with is a great release. I’m an impartial sounding board and, unlike a dear friend, am listening to understand and not respond with my own story.
My clients often arrive at sessions feeling frantic and overwhelmed. Everything that needs their attention feels urgent and important.
Work. Home. Family. Health. Money.
The list is unique to them and seemingly never ending.
They’re desperate to know where to start so that they can feel they’re both making headway and creating more balance.
And by talking things through, identifying priorities and making a clear plan they’ve decluttered and Marie Kondo’d themselves and leave a much happier human being.
A recent client can testify:
‘As a full time working mum with two young children, a high pressure job and a partner trying to fit studying for a degree around his full time job, I was sinking under the pressure of it all. Emily helped me work out what I wanted, prioritise and plan how I was going to achieve my goals.
For anyone feeling blocked, overwhelmed or just struggling to sort some stuff on their own, I’d highly recommend coaching with Emily. It’s amazing what momentum you can build with a little help to unlock a different way of thinking!
As a result of the coaching I feel calmer, more balanced, and more confident that I can make change and achieve more goals in my personal life. I feel hopeful and positive and empowered.’
If you’d like to get more organised and feeling calmer this Spring I am running an online programme for LifeClubs from 10th March. We have a few early bird tickets left and I’d love you to join me.
